The Australian men's sevens team is out of the Rio Olympics, after a 22-5 defeat at the hands of South Africa in the quarter-finals.

The Aussies managed to beat South Africat 12-5 earlier on day two to reach the quarters, however, were unable to repeat the result at Deodoro Stadium in the quarter-final.

Meanwhile, New Zealand were also knocked out in the quarter-finals, beaten by gold medal favourties, Fiji, 12-7.

Fiji will now take on Japan in the semi-final at 3.30am Friday morning AEST, while South Africa will play Great Britain at 4am.

The gold medal match is on Friday at 8am.
