The Aquis Brumbies have signed Australian Olympian Tom Cusack for the 2017 Super Rugby season.
The talented Canberra Royals’ junior has been with the Australian Sevens program since 2013 and was a key member of the squad that competed at the Rio Olympics in August. He ended the tournament as Australia’s leading try-scorer, crossing for four tries.
The 23-year old is a former member of the ARU National Gold Squad, the ARU’s national Rugby development program for high school students. He represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2010.
In 2012 he represented Australia at the U20 World Championships alongside fellow Brumbies players Allan Alaalatoa, James Dargaville, Kyle Godwin and Leslie Leulua’iali’i-Makin.
He was brought into the Australian Sevens squad for the Wellington 7s in 2013, and quickly established himself as an asset with ball in hand. He has since represented the Australian Sevens at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Cusack says he is looking forward to moving home and linking with the Brumbies training squad for 2017.
“I’m very happy to be moving home,” Cusack said.
“I’ve supported the Brumbies since I was a kid and played all my junior representative footy in Canberra before making the switch to Sevens where I’ve had some incredible experiences.
“Being able to travel the world and compete at a Commonwealth Games and the Olympics is an athlete’s dream and I was lucky enough to have done that, but now I’m ready to see what’s in store in the future with the Brumbies.
“Readjusting to the 15-a-side game will surely pose a challenge but it’s one I’m really looking forward to and to be able to do it in Canberra alongside a lot of the guys I grew up playing with and against in the local competition is a dream come true."
